The Chilean author Lina Meruane published her first book, the short story collection Las Infantas, in 1998 and since then she has written books like the novel Seeing Red besides essays like Becoming Palestine and Against Children.

In her writing Meruane uses the body as a starting point when she describes the challenges, Latin American modernity faces following global economic events and development. In her novel Seeing Red the narrator’s eyes haemorrhage – something only the narrator can see – and it becomes the beginning of a story where fiction meets autobiography and the relation between body, science, and vulnerability is in focus.

Lina Meruane has received numerous awards from around the world like the German award Anna Seghers Prize in 2011, the Mexican award Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz Novel Prize in 2012 and the Spanish XV Calamo Otra Mirada Novel Prize in 2016.
