ABOUT LiteratureXchange

LiteratureXchange is an international literature festival held in Aarhus, Denmark. In 2024, LiteratureXchange takes place on June 19th-23rd.

The programme consists of more than 150 events ranging from literary walks and concerts to traditional readings and debates. LiteratureXchange presents international and Danish authors, talks between researchers and authors about international topics, and different offbeat activities all over the city.

See info and photos from previous years here.

Organisers: Aarhus Centre for LiteratureAarhus Public Libraries and FO-Aarhus.

Aarhus Centre for Literature is an independent institution managed by the cultural unity in the municipality of Aarhus. As a primary goal the Centre for Literature works on promoting literature to make it visible in the city of Aarhus, and it encourages cooperation nationally as well as internationally.

Aarhus Public Libraries consists of a main library at Dokk1 and 18 branch libraries. These libraries offer a large number of programs and activities for all citizens. Aarhus Public Libraries also lead or participate in a range of developmental projects - for example about Literature, Democracy, Data- and Media Literacy and the Sustainable Development goals.

FO-Aarhus' core mission is to give people the tools to engage in the society they live in, so as not to become passive bystanders to life. It is central to public awareness-raising activities that they always take place communially and that democratic conversation is part of the activity. We work with this in many ways at FO-Aarhus. Among other things, we run socio-economic cafés and cultural centres and create jobs for people on the edge of the labour market.

LiteratureXchange is sponsored by A.P. Moller Foundation, Aarhus Kommune, Danish Arts Foundation, S.C. Van Fonden, and Toyota-Foundation.

INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVE

LiteratureXchange explores how literature can challenge our understanding of ourselves and the world we live in. Can literature change the world? Can it change our worldview or put it into perspective?

LiteratureXchange will create a space for dialogue about the potential of literature by focusing on current global themes. These will be discussed by international and Danish authors, researchers, and critics.

AIMS OF LiteratureXchange

The Sustainable Development Goals
In the period of 2021 to 2024, the festival programme will be curated with inspiration from The Sustainable Development Goals of the UN.

Youngsters and literature
LiteratureXchange is focusing on greater diversity in age among the audience, co-creators, and initiators. Building on these experiences, LiteratureXchange will expand and develop further so that even more young people can be included and attend the events in 2024.

Stronger communities
Around 40 % of the audience attend LiteratureXchange alone. We see a great potential for developing new concepts, which will support the creation of communities with literature as the main focus.

International collaborations
LiteratureXchange excels by being very well-anchored at both the local and national level. In 2024, we are looking internationally for partners.
